Diet and Nutrition

Quality nutrition is essential regardless of what breed of dog you own.  There are endless choices when it comes to the brands and varieties of dog food on the market so it can be a confusing experience trying to decide what's right for your dog.  There are many "bargain" dog foods that you will find in your local grocery store and while you may feel you're getting a great deal, you're not.  In fact, these foods consist mainly of corn and wheat which are simply cheap filler and hold next to no real nutritional value to a dog.  You may think by feeding these cheap foods that you're saving money but you're not because in the long run, your dog is likely to encounter health problems caused by this poor nutrition and you'll end up spending a small fortune on vet bills because of it.  So you're better off just spending a litte extra money on a quality food  in the first place and you will have a healthier and happier dog because of it.

Benefits of a Healthy Diet

A dog that is fed a healthy well-balanced diet will show many signs of good health including:
- Healthy skin and coat that is soft and shiny and doesn’t tangle easily.
- Little or no unpleasant doggy odor.
- Lots of energy to run and play.
- Strong immune system which will help prevent illnesses.

-Lean muscular body.

-Small firm stools that are easy to clean up.

Problems Associated with Low-Quality Diets

Common problems associated with low-quality diets include:
- Skin odor
- Dull and greasy coat, usually accompanied by dandruff
- Susceptibility to infections and illnesses.
- Too thin or too overweight.
- Low energy level.
- Large messy stools.

Our dogs are fed a diet that consists of roughly 50% quality kibble and 50% raw meat & bones, eggs, fruits & vegetables, as well as a joint supplement.

The kibble that we feed to our dogs is Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream formula.  This is a high quality grain-free diet.  Taste of the Wild comes in three different varieties, but we like the Pacific Stream formula best because it has a moderate protein level (25%) which makes it a suitable food for puppies and adults alike.

We supplement all of our dogs with Aniflex GL powder.  This powder contains Glucosamine, Ester C, MSM, and many other supplements that maintain good joint health.  This product is a must have for all large and giant breeds!

If you're unsure of the quality of your dog's current food, simply grab the bag of food, check the ingredient list, and take the quiz below...

How to grade your dog's food: Start with a grade of 100:

1) For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points

2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat,
meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points

3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points

4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract
5 points

5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first
five ingredients (I.e. "ground brown rice", "brewers rice", "rice
flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points

meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points
